Adults and children carry placards in protest of child trafficking.

Police in Butaleja district have arrested three people over suspected child trafficking.

They include Nabaje Sairuna 35 a resident of Nabiganda village Kachonga Sub-county Christopher Kawu, 32, and Musa Wanande, 35, all residents of Butaleja town council.

It is reported that Sairuna went to Butaleja town yesterday looking for people to buy her six-year-old grandson Simon Kyefefe. Sairuna says her daughter Maureen Nasali, the boy’s mother, left for Kampala three years ago and has since not heard from her.

Sairuna, who claims she had no means of looking after the grandson, is said to have approached Kawu and Wanande to help her sell off her grandson.

The duo later contacted one Mugaga Muto who accepted to buy the boy at UGX30 million.

However, trouble started when Mugaga Muto said he had no money and instead called in police to arrest the trio.

Sawali Kamulya, the Bukedi Region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the trio and said they will be arraigned in court to answer charges of child trafficking.

By press time, the three were being detained at Butaleja Police Station.
