ENTEBBE-The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has lauded the Regional Genetic Resources for Eastern Africa citing it is going to improve the breed of Ugandan animals and those in East Africa at large.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who was the guest of honour at the event on Friday, July 19, inspected some of the animals that are bred in the facility which include; cows, goats and other domestic animals.

He advised the veterinary doctors at the genetic bank and those in charge of the animal facility to manage it well.

He also noted that this genetic bank will help the country to increase the number of animals with a quality breed to enable our country to favourably compete in the International market.

“This is also going to improve people’s lives since many people depend on animal rearing from which they earn a living and also provide food security for their families,” he noted.

Some of the 10 countries which are going to benefit from this genetic bank include; Uganda, Burundi, Comoros, Ethiopia, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and others African nations.

The Minister for Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, (MAAIF) Hon Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja said that this genetic bank is very important to our country because it is going to increase on the number of animals in Uganda.

He, therefore, urged all the farmers to engage in this new system which is going to help them benefit from animal breeding.
