Agricultural officials, Police raid Gulu, impound counterfeit agro-inputs

GULU – Officials from Ministry of Agriculture and Uganda Police force have stormed Gulu, impounding fake agro inputs worth unspecified amount of money.

According to Deo Okello Latigo, the Agricultural Inspector in Gulu, the ‘fake’ agro inputs including fertilizers, chemicals, seeds and pesticides were seized in an operation conducted on Wednesday.

He said the inputs were seized during an inspection in six Agro-Input shops including Mak-Kweri, Okado, Gang Pur, Pur Lonyo, Lapur Pe Tur, and Lute Agro-Input Investment, all in Gulu town.

Mr. Latigo explained that the impounded inputs will be destroyed in the Uganda People’s Defense Force – UPDF army barracks in Nakasongola district.

Latigo also blames the sale of the fake and expired goods on the agro Input dealers, saying they don’t regularly check their stock.

Alfred Ocen, the Senior Commercial Officer Gulu district said that the inspection is of benefit both to the agro input dealers and the farmers.

Patrick Lumumba Oola, the proprietor of Pur Lonyo Agro-Input revealed that only two bottles of fertilizers were confiscated from his shop.

He said the two bottles were for his stock of last year.

Gulu is the second district after Kiriandongo that the team inspecting in Northern Uganda and West Nile region.
