KAMPALA — The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) had the new Governing Council take-over its leadership at a handover function held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Friday, February 19 2021.

The handover ceremony was graced by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba who applauded PRAU for being a strong association that has been successfully governed for the last ten years the Minister of ICT & National Guidance has been patron.

Nabakooba urged PRAU to continue working closely with Government agencies on communication initiatives and to also work with their peers in the media industry to fight fake news that’s becoming a global challenge in these times.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is changing perception and it’s part of PRAU’s role to build a body of knowledge in the new normal. We expect PR practitioners to prioritize safety of employees through various communication initiatives,” Nabakooba said.

The new Governing Council which was set up at the Association’s 44th Annual General Meeting had new members elected and have since had a smooth transition.

According to the outgoing President
Ms. Sarah Kagingo, the handover ceremony highlighted the end of their 2-year term that witnessed a
substantial growth of members by 100 percent and is confident the number will continue to grow under President Stephen Mwanga’s administration.

“I pledge to support the incoming GC and its endeavors and have faith that the association will be advanced further to greater heights. We are happy to have witnessed PRAU grow into a respected brand and our tenure has since seen UGX 45 million put side for the establishment of our PRAU home,” said Ms Kagingo the out-going PRAU president.

The incoming President, Mr. Stephen Mwanga highlighted PRAU’s statutory recognition and mapping out strategic working relationships with organizations such as the Uganda Government Communicators Forum (GCOF), Uganda Law Society, and cultural institutions such as Buganda Kingdom, Tooro Kingdom as some of the first priorities the new Governing Council will be working on.

“Our ultimate goal is to gain a statutory instrument and get professional recognition. After 45 years, the time is now.” Mr. Mwanga noted.
