TOTORO – President Yoweri Museveni has on Saturday commissioned the ultra-modern Tororo Main market in Tororo municipality as part of his campaign trail in Bukedi sub-region.

The market will accommodate over 1700 vendors, especially women and youths.

Speaking at the function, the President said such developments indicate the way the NRM does its work.

“People waste alot of time talking but words of NRM is work,” Museveni said.

He, however, said that having put in place such facilities , the onus is on people to stop working for only the stomach but also ensure to have something in their pockets.

“Work for both the stomach and pocket but with calculation. If all homes that have land do that, the whole area will be part of the money economy,” he said.

According to the State Minister for Labour, Jenifer Namuyangu, the modern market has over 1000 facilities including lockups, stalls, shops, pitches, restaurants, food courts, day care centre, butchery cold rooms, clinic, pharmacy, fish facilities, fresh food facilities, ware houses, offices, solar facilities, water reservoir, stand alone transformer for electricty and a public address system.

The market is also fitted with CCTV cameras connected to the central security system as well as fire-fighting equipment to be used in case of any fire outbreak

The Ugx. 27.7 billion Tororo central market was constructed under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program phase II (MATIP-2) and the construction works were done by Youngjin construction – a Korean company with financial support from the African Development bank.
