KAMPALA – Centenary Bank has committed UGX.496 million sponsorship to the Masaza Cup tournament. This was during the official launch of the 2020 tournament at Bulange Mengo.

Speaking at the launch, Ms. Immaculate Ngulumi, the Chief Manager Marketing Brand at Centenary Bank said, “We are humbled by the continued call to us for involvement in the Masaza cup preparations. As Centenary Bank, we are very much honored to be part of this initiative, as has been for the past 5 years. Our allegiance remains solid, and our commitment stronger as we partner to build young talent through the Masaza Tournament.”

“This year 2020 has come with challenges especially for those in the sports world, whose earnings have been impacted greatly. For this reason, therefore, Centenary Bank has increased the value of our sponsorship to Ushs. 496m for the next 3 years as a way to support the Buganda Kingdom in the preparations,” Ms. Immaculate added.

“Despite the challenging times brought upon us by the global pandemic, it is essential that as a country we can exhibit resilience and continue to pursue our goals with determination.”

Immaculate observed, further saying that, “Resuming the Masaza Cup this year is a good example of such relentlessness and we appreciate the organizers for a job well done in ensuring it happens.”

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owe’kitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga commended Centenary Bank for their unwavering support towards the Buganda Kingdom activities and the generous contribution. “Centenary Bank has remained a loyal partner to Buganda Kingdom as has continued to support our activities and made contributions that go a long way in ensuring these events are successful. For this, we are grateful,” the Katikkiro remarked.

The 2020 Masaza Cup tournament is set to commence on 12th December at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, Buikwe district, an activity that will only be televised for fans to watch on-screen, unlike in the past where crowds gathered to support their clan teams. The opening match will be between the defending champions Bulemeezi against Butambala.

As a way to support the teams and ensure they are facilitated, each was provided with financial support worth Ushs. 4 million to aide them in the preparations for the kickoff of the tournament.

According to Henry Ssekabembe, the Buganda Kingdom Sports Minister, the kingdom will further ensure a smooth operating environment for the teams. “I duly confirm that all the accommodation needs, COVID-19 tests will be catered for by the Buganda kingdom, as well as televise the games on BBS Terefayina, in respect of the Ministry of Health guidelines on games and sporting activities.”

The Masaza Cup is an annual tournament organized by the Buganda Kingdom intended to identify young promising footballers, develop their talent while mobilizing the people of Buganda through sports.
