KAMPALA —Dr Warren D Carew, a leading Digital Financial Services (DFS) technologist, was recently honoured with the Africa FinTech Leadership Award. The award was presented by HiPipo through its Include Everyone program.
The Award was handed over to Dr Warren during the 2019 Include Everyone Summit and Digital Impact Awards Africa held on 20th September 2019 in Kampala, Uganda and attended by over 300 delegates from across Africa.
According to HiPipo CEO, Innocent Kawooya, “the Africa FinTech Leadership Award is presented to an outstanding individual or organisation that has persistently contributed to the advancement of the Technology and Finance sector, through championing development of disruptive and or cutting edge innovations and inventions for financial technology over a number of years.”
Dr Warren was a core member of the team that developed and successfully launched the world changing mobile money service M-PESA in Kenya in 2007.
He is currently the Vice President and General Manager of ModusBox – a software firm that enables enterprise integration through Business to Business (B2B) digital and finance services solutions.
Their latest revolution is Mojaloop; an open-source software for financial services companies, regulators, and others taking on the challenges of interoperability and financial inclusion.

Mojaloop is supported by Global System Mobile Association (GSMA) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In West Africa; MTN and Orange Group are using the Mojaloop open source software for a joint mobile money wallet product code-named MOWALI while Tanzania at the start of this year rolled out the Tanzania Instant Payments System (TIPS) fully supported by the same software.
Mojaloop has now entered the Uganda market with developers hopeful that it will fix financial interoperability challenges, especially cross network mobile money transactions.
