URA officials close the premises of Parambot Distilleries Ltd yesterday.

KAMPALA. Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has closed Parambot Distilleries Ltd and Transtrac Logistics over tax arrears.

Officials from URA’s domestic revenue collection unit led by Stanley Kabyemera, locked down the business premises of Parambot Distilleries Ltd along Gayaza road for non-payment over defaulting taxes amounting to Shs9.2 billion.

“In our debt collection operation today, we have locked down the business premises of Parambot, including offices and the distillery, due to tax arrears that have accumulated since 2014,” Kabyemera told journalists, adding that the distillery signed an agreement with URA to pay its arrears in installments but had failed to meet its end of the bargain.

The revenue collectors are in a rush against time to meet targets. As of May, URA was Shs200 billion short of the target. The tax collector has barely two weeks left to meet the target as the new financial year comes into effect on July 1.

The operation saw the revenue recovery officials ‘impound’ company vehicles, barring them from leaving the premises until the arrears are cleared, local websites reported. URA has warned that failure to clear the arrears could see to further drastic actions such as auction of the vehicles to recover the tax arrears.
