Uganda Cup – Round of 16
Kyetume FC vs Maroons FC
Mighty Arena, Jinja
Friday, 13-03-2020 @4pm
Charles Ayieko and his technical team will take charge of their first game at Maroons FC on Friday.
The Luzira based side will be away to fellow Uganda Premier League side Kyetume FC at the Mighty Arena in Jinja, in the Cup.
Ayieko and co were only confirmed earlier this week, replacing Douglas Bamweyana who had overseen a series of poor results that in turn saw the team slip into the relegation zone.
It is a huge task for the new management to save Maroons from relegation as the other teams around them are also not giving up as yet, winning their games.
The cup acts as a destruction from the league troubles and Ayieko and his staff will know that victory over Kyetume will do their side a whole lot of good.
“We head into the game eyeing victory, noted Maroons assistant coach Eric Ndifuna ahead of the game.
“We play a fellow UPL side and e expect a tough encounter but the players are ready.
“Yes we have not been with them for long but the few days since Monday have been enough and we are confident they will execute.”
Maroons will be expected to be without the injured duo Pius Obuya and Solomon Walusimbi.
There is also concern that top scorer-Steven Mukwala and goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo may also miss out due to national team duty. The pair is training with the Cranes team in Luzira and after KCCA FC failed in their attempts to secure their players ahead of the Uganda Cup victory away to Doves, it remains to be seen whether Maroons will be get theirs.
Maroons will not be the only ones waiting to secure an asset from the national team come Friday.
Kyetume FC custodian Joel Mutakubwa is also with the Cranes and the Slaughters will be eager to have their first choice goalkeeper in-between the sticks.
Just like Maroons, Kyetume will be hoping for victory in the cup.
Before the league took a break, the Slaughters had seen an incredible turn in form, moving away from the relegation zone.
A run of only a single loss in six games saw Kyetume move six points above 14th placed Maroons.
However, that defeat came in their latest fixtures as they lost 1-0 to Busoga United.
To reach the last 16, Kyetume beat San Siro 3-0 before ejecting Kigezi Home Boys via penalties.
For Maroons, they have been required to endure the tension of penalties in both their round of 64 and 32, eliminating both Young Elephants and Express in the process.
Friday’s fixture will be the second time the two sides meet in a competitive game.
The first one saw Maroons win 1-0 in September 2019.
