Vipers SC’s hunt for a first Uganda Cup title since 2016 gets underway on Wednesday as they take on Kajjansi United at the Betway Mutessa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

The Venoms captured their only cup title four years ago, defeating Onduparaka FC 3-1 in the final played at Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium.

Since then, they have failed to add a second crown, coming close in 2018 when they fell 1-0 to KCCA FC in the final.

On Wednesday, they will be expected to make lightweight of Kajjansi United when the two meet in an Entebbe Roady derby.

The Venoms have been without a doubt the best side in the country this season and a shock loss to their geographical neighbours would be one the major upsets of the Cup in recent years.

“It is important is to forget what happened last Friday against SC Villa, said Vipers SC head coach Edward Golola.

“We have put that in the past and our focus now is on the task at hand. This is a different game, a different competition and it will be tough.”

“We have to be motivated if we are to go far, this is a knockout competition that gives you no second chance when you fumble, but you have to perform at your best if you want to win.”

Vipers who are coming off a 1-0 loss at home to SC Villa will be without captain Halid Lwaliwa who lost his mother on Tuesday. Bashir Asiku and Siraje Ssentamu are also set to miss out with injuries. However, Brian Nkuubi, Tito Okello and Abraham Ndugwa are slated to make a return to the side. Aziz Kayondo has also recovered from a bout of malaria but will be subjected to a late fitness test.

For Kajjansi United, they will be hoping for a major upset when they face the Venoms.

The regional side who missed out on promotion to the Big League after losing the playoff final to Katwe United, know that they are underdogs in this case but will not be afraid.

“Vipers SC is a strong side but we are more than ready for the big challenge ahead of us, noted Kajjansi head coach Moses Ssenyonga.

“I believe my players will play their hearts out to get the best result.

“I call upon our fans to come in numbers to rally behind our team as we hope for victory on Wednesday.”

The other two matches slated for Wednesday will see Busia Young host Busoga United at the Busia Integrated Primary School in Busia and Bugamba will entertain Onduparaka at the Bugamba ground.
