LUGOGO – Uganda are the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2019 Champions!

The Cranes sealed the crown on Thursday afternoon following a 3-0 victory over Eritrea at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.

Just like it has been throughout the tournament, the Cranes dominated both halves and it was no surprise they took the day in the end.

A first half strike by Bright Anukani and a goal each in the second period from Mustafa Kizza and Joel Madondo did the damage for Johnathan McKinstry’s side.

Anukani fed off an Allan Okello pass to squeeze in the opener at the near post on 31 minutes.

With Eritrea trying all they can to get back in the game, Kizza doubled Uganda’s advantage on 68 minutes as he collected from Karim Watambala before blasting into the back of the net.

With a minute to play, substitute Madondo put the icing on the cake as he finished off a Ben Ocen long-pass for Uganda’s third. The Kirinya JSS forward had six minutes earlier, replaced Fahad Bayo as McKinstry and his technical team called for a final change.

Speaking after the game, McKinstry noted that it had been a good tournament for Uganda.

“It has been a good tourney for us, noted Mckinstry.

“We knew its going to be very tight so we had to manage our schedule very well.

“We missed many good chances but we have managed to show that we have enough quality to score goals.”

This is Uganda’s 15th CECAFA crown in history and the first since 2012.

They have won all their five matches at the competition this year, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.

For Eritrea, this is their best ever finish at the regional competition and it is a big step in their development.
