NJERU – The Uganda U17 Girls National team is ‘ready’ to try and topple Burundi in their opening game of the CECAFA U17 Girls Cup.

The two sides will face off in one of the three games lined up on the opening day.

Speaking ahead of the game, Uganda’s heady coach Ayub Khalifa says his team is ready to win the opening game and represent the country well.

“The team is very ready for tomorrow’s game, noted Khalifah in Sunday’s press conference.

“My players are very determined to win the game. It is the first of its kind but I promise Ugandans that we shall fight tooth and nail to represent the country well.

“We urge fans to turn up in big numbers to support out girls as we try to lift the title.”

Khalifa selected and released the list from the 29 players who have been undergoing residential training in Njeru, after two crucial final training sessions on Saturday afternoon and Friday evening.

The team is largely made up of players who won the COSAFA championship in Mauritius this year where they featured as guests, but Khalifa has three faces of Uganda Martyrs defender Gloria Namugerwa, Amus College pair of striker Zaina Nandede and midfielder Esther Adokole.

Uganda’s game against Burundi is the third lined up for the day with Tanzania opening against Eritrea in the first game at 11:00am while Djibouti takes on Kenya in the second game at 1:30pm.

Meanwhile, the teams that will take part in the event have already got chance to feel the turn in Njeru.
