CAF Champions League – First Round

Petro de Luanda vs KCCA FC

Estadio 11 de Novembro, Luanda

Saturday, 14-09-2019 @6pm

Uganda Premier League defending champions KCCA FC have announced a squad of 17 players ahead of their CAF Champions League first-round qualifier away to Angolan side Petro de Luanda.

The two sides will clash on Saturday, September 14th at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.

There three major exclusions in the squad that was announced on Thursday morning.

New signings John Revita, Keziron Kizito and Erisa Ssekisambu have all be left out. The reason for their exclusion has not been mentioned.

However, fellow summer recruit Simon Sserunkuma has been included and is in line to make his continental debut.

Sserunkuma may be handed his continental debut on Saturday.

Charles Lukwago and Jamil Malyamungu are the two goalkeepers that will be heading to Angola.

Youngstar Eric Ssenjobe is one of four defenders that have been chosen to represent KCCA FC in the first leg while the likes of Allan Okello, Muzamir Mutyaba and Mike Mutyaba are also part of the team.

KCCA FC will be hoping to get a positive result on the road before a return leg in Kampala in two weeks’ time.

Last season, they had a disappointing continental campaign, failing to reach the group stages of the confederations cup.

Having received a bye in the preliminary stages, Mike Mutebi’s side took care of Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar 5-1 on aggregate to reach the playoff round.

In the playoffs, KCCA would fall to Congo’s Otoho Doyo. Having lost 3-0 in the first leg, Mutebi’s side won the second 2-0, losing 3-2 on aggregate in the end.

In the Champions League, KCCA FC’s last appearance came in 2018 when they reached the lucrative group stages of the competition.

In the initial stages, they eliminated CNaPS and Kedus Giorgis in the preliminary and first-round respectively.

However, they were overpowered by Al Ahly and Esperance in Group A, finishing third and bowing out.

KCCA FC eliminated Namibia’s African Stars to reach this stage while Luanda beat Lesotho’s Matlama 4-0 on aggregate.

Winner at this stage, will book a ticket to the group stage while the loser will fall to the CAF Confederation qualifiers.
