LUGOGO – Proline edged Wakiso Giants 1-0 to clinch the 2018 FUFA Big League title on Saturday 18th May-2019.
Bright Anukani scored the lone goal of the contest, played at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.
The game started at a low tempo with much of the play happening in the middle.
The first chance of the game went Proline’s way but captain Nordin Bunjo tapped wide a low Richard Ajuna cross.
Proline were dominating the early exchanges and created another opportunity as Bright Anukani found himself in acres of space in the Wakiso area. However, his goal-bound shot was pushed wide by Yasin Mugabi.
At the other end, Adul Karim Kasule was played in by Ayub Kisalita but his cutback was fired straight at Saka Mpima before by Sulaiman Jjinjo before the former Express left back lobbed the ball over on the rebound.
Two minutes past the half hour mark, Wamanah Ibrahim pounced on a lose ball but fired over the bar from a promising positions.
However they would not be denied for a second time as they went ahead moments later.
Anukani controlled a Wamanah header just outside the box and fired it into the back of the net past a helpless Mugabi.
Ayub Kisalita had a chance to draw Wakiso level but his weak shot from outside the area went straight at the Proline custodian.
With a minute to play in the first period, Kasule headed wide a Kasibante free-kick to sum up Wakiso’s opening half.
At the start of the second half, Wakiso made a double substitution that saw Yasin Mugume and Norman Ojik replace Kasule and Jjingo respectively.
With Wakiso unable to create meaningful chances, they were forced to make another substitution as Feni Ali replaced Kisalita.
A minute later, a Mugume cross was headed onto the cross bar by Ojick before Karim Ndugwa shot his rebound straignt at the keeper.
Wakiso looked to be in control of the game but were still struggling to create chances.
On 65 minutes, Ojick made a good turn inside the box but his goal-bound shot was pushed out for a fruitless corner kick by the keeper.
With 15 minutes to play, Ndugwa collided with Mustafa Muguzi in the air and the striker came off worse. Ndugwa was forced off leaving Wakiso to play the rest of the game, a man less.
In the end, Anukani’s goal proved too much for Wakiso as Proline held on to win 1-0.
The victory means Shafick Bisaso’s side make an instant return to the top flight as champions of the second tier.
