Desabre names AFCON preliminary squad, features only local based players

KAMPALA – Uganda Cranes head coach, Sebastian Desabre has named a squad of 19 players, all local based, that will start preparations ahead of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

14 of the 19 summoned players feature in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

KCCA FC has six players on the squad including Charles Lukwago, Timothy Awanyi, Saddam Juma, Allan Okello, Patrick Kaddu and Allan Kyambadde.

Vipers’ duo of Halid Lwaliwa and Captain Tadeo Lwanga have also been summoned despite the former’s latest injury issues.

On the same list, League top scorer Juma Balinya of Police FC has been handed another chance.

Balinya who managed 19 goals this past season was also part of the squad that prepared for the 3-0 loss away to Tanzania but was dropped from the travelling team.

The other 5 players on the just summoned squad are players that are in the country as free agents or back following the closure of the Leagues in their respective countries.

Godfrey Walusimbi and Hassan Wasswa Mawanda are the two unattached players on the squad.

For Bevis Mugabi (Yeovil Town-England), Daniel Isiagi (Al Nasir-Egypt) and Khalid Aucho (Churchhill Brothers-India), they are already in their off-season as their respective leagues ended.

The Preliminary Squad will camp at Kabira Country Club for residential training starting Monday 13th May 2019.

From this Squad, the Head coach will select players for the 26 man Squad for further training in the United Arab Emirates.

In the UAE, those that will have been chosen will join the foreign-based players from which the Frenchman will announce the final 23 man squad to feature in the Total AFCON Finals in Egypt.

Uganda Cranes was drawn in Group A of the finals alongside hosts Egypt, DR Congo and Zimbabwe.

At the tournament that runs from June 21st to July 21st, Uganda will first take on DR Congo on June 22 at the Cairo International Stadium.

Their next fixture will be against Zimbabwe on the 26th of June at the same Venue, before the end the groups against the Hosts on the 30th.
