KAMPALA – JKL Dolphins have completed the signing of UPDF Tomahawks forward Bernard Okumu.
The former National Basketball League (NBL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) is understood to have put pen to paper on a two year deal that will see him feature for the Dolphins up to 2021.
Speaking after his signing, Okumu said that JKL’s organisation, ambitions and structure was key to joining them.
“I think JKL Dolphins are an organized team with clear structure and plan, said Okumu.
“I, like any other player, would like to win the championship again and this looks like a team that is work8ng towards that goal.
Okumu won his first and only NBL title back in 2008 when he was still featuring for Betway Power.
He has gone on to feature for several clubs including Vegetarians, Ndejje University, Falcons and UPDF.
While at Vegetarians in 2013, Okumu won the NBL MVP award for his performances in 2013 that saw him top the scoring charts with 340 points while also out rebounding everyone with 214 Rebounds.
The 6ft 4in forward was a key player for UPDF last season, scoring 198 points and Rebounding 112 times.
Okumu started playing Basketball at Primary school level with Rev. John Foundation School before joining St. Mary’s College, Kisubi (SMACK) where he played all throughout his High School, featuring in the Sprite Basketball Championships.
At University level, he captained the Makerere University Business School team in several tournaments including the inter-university games.
Okumu becomes the first addition to the JKL Dolphins roster this off-season.
The dolphins tip off the upcoming season on Sunday 14th-April against Our Saviour at the MTN Arena in Lugogo.
