KIGALI – Uganda will take on Kenya in the opening match of the 2018 CECAFA Women’s championship in Kigali at the Stade de Kigali.
The team that is managed by Faridah Bulega will be hoping for a better start this time round after they were humiliated by the same side two years ago in their home tournament.
Kenya defeated Uganda 4-0 in their group opener in the last edition held in 2016 in Jinja-Uganda.
Team captain Tracy Akiror is optimistic the Crested Cranes will get a positive result against Kenya this time round.
“For the days we have been here (Rwanda), we have gotten used to the weather and that has helped our preparations greatly, siad Akiror.
“We have been prepared adequately by the coaches and the technical team as a whole.
“We are hoping to get the best in this tournament and we are looking forward to registering a win in our first game against Kenya.
“All i can say is that we are all prepared and hope we will bring the trophy home.
Uganda has struggled to get the better of Kenya lately, with the Harambe Startles eliminating the Crested Cranes 1-0 on aggregate in the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers last April.
This is the third edition of the tournament with only Zanzibar and Tanzania winning it before.
Zanzibar won the first edition that was hosted in the same country in 1986 while Tanzania defeated Kenya 2-1 in the finals of the 2016 championships held in Uganda.
Uganda finished fourth in 2016 after losing 4-1 to Ethiopia in the third play-off games.
The other fixture today will see Rwanda take on Tanzania in the late kick-off.
This year’s tournament will be played on a round robin format.
