Our target is to win CHAN 2018, says Basena

FOOTBALL–Uganda has been drawn in group B for the upcoming African Nations Championships(CHAN) to be held in Morocco early next year.

With the East African giants under performing at the past four events, Uganda will fancy their chances of progressing from the group despite it containing two former semi finalists.

The group contains Ivory Coast who finished third at the last event in Rwanda and Zambia who finished in the same position I the inaugural tournament in 2009.

The other group opponent is Southern Africa side Namibia who enter their first finals tournament.

Uganda has always found it difficult in the group stages of the competition with their best results caming at the 2014 edition in South Africa where a Yunus Ssentamu inspired Cranes side finished third in group D with four points from three games.

At the last edition, Uganda was in group D with Zimbabwe, Mali and Zambia.
The Cranes managed two draws and a 1-0 loss to Zambia in the second group game to finish third on two points.

Speaking to PML Daily, Cranes head coach Moses Basena was full of confidence after the group’s were announced.

“It is a strong group and a expect alot of competition from the other countries. Said Basena.

“Uganda is now at a level where a can compete with whoever a meet.

“All the side are now on the same level in Africa so who ever purnishes the other’s mistakes will hold the upper hand.

“Going into CHAN, our target is to win as many games as possible and possibly the finals too. Concluded Basena.

The Uganda Cranes squad that will take part in the CHAN tournament will be announced in December.

CHAN Group stages.

GROUP A: Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Guinea.

GROUP B: Ivory Coast, Zambia, Uganda and Namibia.

GROUP C: Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Rwanda.

GROUP D: Angola, Congo, Cameroon and Burkinafaso.
