KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) has firmly established itself as the market leader in Uganda’s printing and publishing industry, boasting a rich history spanning 122 years.
As the nation’s oldest printing and publishing company, UPPC has undergone significant transformations to adapt to the evolving demands of its clients and the market. Recently, the corporation welcomed a new board of directors and managing director, bringing fresh insights and innovative strategies to the forefront.
This leadership transition has positioned UPPC to maintain its status as a market leader while exploring new avenues, particularly in commercial and security printing. With advanced security printing equipment, UPPC stands out as the sole Ugandan entity capable of producing authentic security documents.
These documents include transcripts, ID cards, security tapes, stock certificates, tamper-proof materials, and various other secure materials. The corporation also has its sights set on the future of currency printing.
In addition to its security printing capabilities, UPPC has invested in state-of-the-art printing machinery, significantly enhancing productivity and supporting large-scale projects. This advanced technology enables UPPC to meet the diverse needs of its clients without compromising timeliness or quality.
Currently, UPPC’s digitalization efforts have reached 35%, with a goal to achieve 80% by 2028. The installation of an easy-to-use web portal has expedited procedures and improved customer satisfaction, providing access to a vast collection of statutory and legal publications.
The Uganda Gazette and various other products are now conveniently available at unmatched costs. UPPC’s digital revolution enables the corporation to serve a larger clientele and complete printing and publishing tasks more efficiently.
In its quest for growth and sustainability, UPPC is actively pursuing partnerships with government and non-government agencies. The corporation has established Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with top educational institutions, local and regional printers, religious groups, and cultural organizations.
These collaborations foster industry cooperation, addressing challenges associated with outsourcing printing services abroad. Statistics indicate that strengthening the local market could save the government up to $10 million annually spent on outsourcing printing work abroad.
Furthermore, UPPC is in the final stages of revamping its printer’s school. The training center aims to address professionalism gaps in the printing sector, equipping individuals with essential skills and ensuring a well-prepared workforce for the industry.
The Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation is a public enterprise wholly owned by the government, established in 1992 under the UPPC Act, Cap 330. Originating in 1902 as the Government Printer under British colonial rule, UPPC provides stationery and printing and publishing services to government ministries, departments, and private entities.
