ARUA – Thousands of supporters have turned to welcome Kyadondo East Mp Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine in Arua as he returned the area to celebrate the victory of Arua Municipality MP Kassiana Wandri.
Supporters – many adorned in red, have turned up as Mr. Wine, a singer cum politician returned to Arua amid heavy security deployment.
Most of the supporters are donned in red clothes, berets, and ribbons tied on their heads, symbolizing their allegiance to the “People Power” movement led by Mr. Wine.
Security is heavily deployed and every person is subjected to thorough body checks at the entrance.
Although Police has heavily deployed and every person including VIPs are subjected to intense body checks, Mr. Wine and his team who jetted in the county on Saturday night from Dubai where they organised successful music concerts have made their way to Arua without any interference from police and other authorities.
A number of police vehicles including anti-riot water, pepper and foam canons arrived in Arua are visibly seen at Arua Hill Grounds, a place of the event.
A number of People Power inclined Members of Parliament including MP Joseph Sewungu, MP Francis Zaake, MP Asuman Baslirwa, MP Gerald Karuhanga, MP. Barnabas Tinkasimire are all in attendance.
Others include Gen Mugisha Muntu and others.
Mr. Wadri won the Arua municipality by-election in August last 2018, after beating Nusura Tiperu, the National Resistance Movement -NRM candidate in a hotly contested race.
But by the time of the declaration of results, he had been arrested alongside several other legislators and opposition supporters for allegedly pelting stones at the presidential convoy. He was later charged with treason.
However, security personnel have erected tents and camped at Arua Police grounds, while a command Centre has also been established near the West Nile Police headquarters to manage security, during the celebrations.
West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Josephine Angucia told reporters on Saturday evening this that the deployment is to ensure security during the celebrations.
The victory celebrations for MP Wadri Kassiano comes after the High Court dismissed a petition filed by his opponent Nusura Tiperu seeking nullification of Kassiano’s victory with costs a week ago.
