Makerere University suspends students for participating in demonstration

MAKERERE – Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor has indefinitely suspended three students for engaging in acts of inciting violence at the University including disruption of a Guild Representative Council (GRC) session and causing damage to University property on Sunday.

Mr Jobs Dhabona of School of Psychology, Mr Daniel Kituno, Bachelor of Commerce External and Mr Samuel Kigula of School of Medicine were suspended for masterminding illegal demonstrations.

In letters seen by PML Daily, issued Monday, August 6, Prof Nawangwe said the three have been suspended to ensure safety and security of members of the University community and property, as well as peaceful activities of the university.

“It has come to my attention that you are involved in acts that are intended to cause anarchy at the university,” Prof Nawangwe wrote adding that “I hereby suspend you from Makerere University with immediate effect and until further notice.”

The three are accused of among other ‘illegal acts’ of circulating inflammatory messages on social media, calling for defiance and disruption of university activities.

He added that “you also participated in an illegal demonstration, during which you disrupted the guild representative council GRC session pausing danger to lives of participants and university property on 5th August, September 2018,”

Dhabona Jobs, a student of the school of Psychology was issued a suspension over inciting violence at the top university

He said that the three will be invited for further discussions on the matter on a date that will be communicated in the due course.

According to Prof Nawangwe, the said illegal actions are in breach of the University policies and National laws that give birth to both criminal and civil liberties of which the suspended are part.

Prof Nawangwe said that despite several warnings and engagements students had refused to take a heed.
