NAIROBI, Kenya – In a significant development, President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki to replace impeached Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President of Kenya. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula made the announcement, revealing that President Ruto sent a formal message regarding Professor Kindiki’s nomination to fill the vacancy left by the previous deputy president.
“I wish to report to the House that today morning, I have received a message from His Excellency the President regarding the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki, to fill the vacancy which has occurred in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, following the impeachment of the previous office holder,” Speaker Wetang’ula said.
Professor Kindiki, a seasoned politician and lawyer, has been a key ally of President Ruto. Their association dates back to 2012 when Kindiki defended Ruto at The Hague in a crimes against humanity case. Following that, Kindiki’s political career gained momentum, and he played a crucial role in drafting the Jubilee Alliance party’s constitution and manifesto ahead of their 2013 victory.
As Interior Minister, Kindiki has demonstrated his ability to handle sensitive and critical portfolios. His nomination as Deputy President is seen as a strategic move by President Ruto, leveraging their long-standing relationship and Kindiki’s experience in politics.
Leaders from various quarters have congratulated Kindiki on his nomination, expressing confidence in his abilities to take on the role of Deputy President. The nomination is subject to parliamentary approval, and if successful, Kindiki will become Kenya’s new Deputy President.
This development marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape, and eyes are on the parliamentary proceedings to confirm Kindiki’s nomination. The decision is expected to have far-reaching implications for the country’s governance and political stability.
