KAMPALA The Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni has revealed that 15 girls gave birth during the UCE2020 exams.

The Minister and First Lady was speaking during the release of the ceremony held at State House Nakasero on Friday.

“This is unacceptable. Parents, these children are yours [parents] first. Unless we are willing to share the responsibilities, we will continue to have problems,” she said.

She told the parents that education is a shared responsibility.

“It doesn’t matter if the government puts the facilities in place; if the parents and guardians fail to do their part, it is all for nothing.”

Mrs Museveni said that they do not see improvement in the science subjects commensurate to the investments they have made.

“We hear about the science teachers roaming around the villages in the private schools to get more money, yet they earn more than the arts teachers. We have to ensure that inspection is done and the teachers not found on duty should lose those jobs.”

The Minister condemned the online registration of students joining S.1, saying the government selection has not yet happened.

She also said that technical schools have a lot of opportunities, yet young people tend to shun them.

“I urge parents to encourage their children to take up these opportunities.”
