KAMPALA – The Ministry of Education and Sports says Education Minister Ms Janet Museveni will communicate the next steps for the sector including opening of the new term in view of the extension of the Coronavirus lockdown by 21 days until May 5, 2020.

Spokesman Patrick Muinda said in a April 15 statement that learners studying privately in preparation for new term opening, and rubbished a statement circulating on social media indicating the first term will commence on May 8.

“We assure the public that you will be kept informed of any and all developments at the Ministry with regard to the opening dates for schools, Education Institutions and the set dates for National Examinations,” Mr. Muinda says.

The Ministry further advised learners to continue studying hard while helping with household chores and physical activity at home.

“We also remind all our learners to constantly adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health,” the statement said.

In her address on April 4, Ms Museveni announced a tentative calendar for schools, tertiary institutions and universities.

Accordingly, the ministry had planned that pre-primary, primary, secondary schools, and Primary Teachers Colleges would open for continuation of Term I on April 27, up to June 12; term 2: 22nd June to 4th September and Term 3: 21st September to 19th December 2020
Where as universities and Other Tertiary Institutions, including BTVET institutions would have opened for continuation of the current Semester on 2nd May, 2020. But the government has decided to extend the current Coronavirus lockdown upto May 05, meaning that any other programmes must conform to the lockdown.
