IGANGA – Police in Iganga district are holding a 25-year old man for allegedly raping 100-year-old Woman.

The suspect a resident of Nabiri central village in Kidago sub-county in Iganga is said to have entered the house of the old woman in the night and forced her into sex.

The Iganga District police Commander David Willis Ndaula over the weekend confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

Ndaula was however not happy that the suspect was reported to police after two days of allegedly committing the offence

He wondered why the suspect who has two wives decided to rape the old woman.

He said police are investigating the case so the suspect is produced to court for charges of rape.

He challenged locals to be alert and report such incidences as soon as possible.

Reports show that rape cases are on the rise in Uganda.

According to a 2018 police report for instance, 1,580 cases were reported. This is 245 more than the 1,335 that was reported in 2017.

The report does not capture rape cases that were never reported. Neither does it capture those that were settled between families nor the victims that chose to keep quiet.

Further, the report shows that at least 644 cases were taken to court. Sixteen of these secured convictions, seven were dismissed, and there were no acquittals. There are 620 cases pending and 618 under investigation.
