BUIKWE — Police in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, have arrested a 30-year-old woman for allegedly strangling her 10-year-old child to death.

Fatuma Nakamya, who is a single mother, is alleged to have strangled the child and dumped the body in the bush.

Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto told journalists on Saturday that the suspect was arrested on Friday from Buloba West Zone Village, Njeru Municipality in Buikwe District after residents discovered the body five metres from a jackfruit tree with bruises on his body and a dry banana fiber around the neck.

“The community has been searching for the child since the day of his disappearance and are surprised it’s the mother who discovered his body. This raised suspicion that led to her arrest,” Ms Butoto said.

She added that a postmortem conducted at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary indicated that the deceased was tortured before being strangled.

“I appeal to parents, caretakers and guardians to always keep their children indoors and not send them to shops or in the neighbourhood to play during this period when movement is restricted,” Ms Butoto said.
