Army recovers stolen gun in Kotido, one arrested

KOTIDO – The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has recovered a gun that suspected Karamojong warriors from Kotido district took after killing a prison warder attached to Amita prisons in Abim district.

The cattle raiders took an AK47 gun on March 16 after shooting dead John Kayongo, a prison warder who was on duty guarding the inmates doing work at the prisons farm.

Major Peter Mugisa, the UPDF 3rd division Spokesperson confirmed the recovery of the gun with 20 rounds of ammunition.

He said the gun was recovered on Wednesday, April 1 in Panyangara village, Panyangara sub-county in Kotido district.

“We have managed to recover the gun through our intelligence and also community help,” he said.

According to Major Mugisa, one suspect has so far been arrested as investigations into the killing of the prison warder continues.

He said after the investigations, the suspect will face charges of illegal possession of firearms and murder.

Meanwhile calm has returned to Abim district after army in testifying patrols in the district that used to register killings and raids from suspected Jie warriors of Kotido everyday
