Police arrest over 50 suspected robbers in massive operation

KAMPALA-Police at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala is holding more than 50 suspects suspected to be top of the list of robbers terrorizing Kampala City and its suburbs.

The suspects have on Wednesday, January 29 been arrested in areas of Arua Park, Kiseka Market, Owin Market, Katwe, Mutasa Kafero Street, Kibuye, Clock tower among others during an abrupt operation that was conducted by Police and Internal Security Organization (ISO).

The suspects allegedly rob people especially women of their valuables like phones, handbags, millions of shillings among others.

The Deputy Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire said police received several complaints and cases of theft, robberies with in Kampala Metropolitan in the recent days.

“Actually beginning mid-December up to date cases of theft and robberies have increased in Kampala and this has put security at tension,” says police spokesperson.

He added that police conducted a joint secret operation to have the criminal gangs arrested and prosecuted.

“We managed to arrest top criminal gangs whom we believe have been behind these robberies and theft in Kampala,” says Owoyesigyire.

Owoyesigyire revealed that the operation would continue until all students have gone back to school.

“Most of these criminal gangs target students who are going back to school and rob them of cash and other valuables like phones, nice bags, shoes among others,” he added.

He further says the criminal gangs will help police to allocate the areas where their colleagues are hiding.

“After investigations they will appear before Courts of law on several charges that include robbery, theft,” he stated.

He further warned the public especially Students going back to school to be vigilant while moving around town because they are very many conmen and women around town waiting to steal them.
