Man arrested for ‘swapping’ People’s ATM cards

KAMPALA – Police in Bulenga, Wakiso district have arrested a fraudster who allegedly swaps People’s ATM cards in various banking machines.

The suspect has allegedly been operating in Kampala Metropolitan Policing areas.

Ampurira Ronald aged 35 years was arrested on Thursday, January 23 after he had swapped Mr. Mulumba’s ATM card in Bulenga at one of the ATM machines.

According to police, Ampurira had just withdrawn Mulumba’s Shs 240,000.

“Ampurira normally pose around ATM machines and when he sees a client who is not well conversant on how to use the ATM machine, he rushes to the client and tries to help. He tells you to put your pin code after mastering your code he exchanges his fake ATM with yours and he tells you the machine is not working,” reads police statement in part.

“After you have gone, he uses your card to withdraw your money immediately,” added police.

Police also revealed that on searching, the was got with 25 ATM cards in different names and of various banks.

Mr Ampurira has been charged with theft.
