KAMPALA – A woman on Saturday, October 19, fainted after mistakenly shooting dead a businessman as the latter visited his wife in a private hospital in Kampala.

The incident happened at Kampala Independent Hospital, which is located in Ntinda on the Ntinda-Kiwatule road on Saturday morning.

Zaina Karama is said to have mistakenly shot dead Ali Abdu Zabar while playing with the latter’s pistol at the hospital where the businessman had gone to visit his wife who had given birth.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire, Karama, who is a cousin to Zabar’s wife, shot the businessman after the latter mistakenly left a bullet in the pistol’s magazine chamber.

“The deceased withdraw the gun from her and removed the magazine then handed the gun back to her. She again played with the gun and pointed it at him and when she pulled the trigger, a bullet was discharged and hit the deceased in the chest,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

Attempts by doctors to save Zabar were futile.

After the incident, the suspect collapsed and is also admitted in the same hospital.

A murder charge has been opened against Karama.

“We would like to caution private gun owners to, at all times, be careful on how they hold and operate their guns and never to hand them over to minors or anyone who is not qualified to hold it,” he said.
