IGANGA – A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Iganga District for allegedly impersonating police officers. The Busoga East police Spokesperson, Mr James Mubi, on Saturday said the suspect has been extoting money from residents with cases at police under the guise of helping them to settle the matter. By the time of his arrest, the suspect had wrongly obtained Shs2m from one Ms Beatrice Mwondha purportedly to help her to release her relative from police custody.

Mr Mubi, who added that the suspect pretended to be a police officer attached to Iganga CPS, challenged residents to always ask for warrant cards from anyone purporting to be a police officer. He said charges of impersonation and extortion await the suspect.

Meanwhile, a man who was suspected to be involved in pickpocketing in Bugembe Town, on Sunday survived being lynched by residents. The suspect, who is believed to be behind the snatching of ladies’ handbags, was attacked at Wanyama Road, Bugembe Town Counci in Jinja District when he attempted to grab a handbag from a woman. He was however saved by police commanded by the officer-in-charge of Bugembe Police Station, Mr Samuel Talemwa who took him into custody.
