KAMPALA – Police in Matugga on Wednesday, August 21, arrested a notorious criminal who has been robbing people at ATM machines.
Atukwasa Julius, a resident of Kitagata Town Council in Sheema district was arrested at one of the ATM machines in Matugga where he was pretending to help a woman withdraw money but with intentions of stealing it from her.
However, the woman became suspicious of his conduct and alerted the public who arrested and handed him over to Police.
According to Police, Atukwasa moves with very many ATM cards and hangs around ATM machines, waiting for potential victims to rob under the pretext of helping them.
During interrogation, Atukwasa disclosed to police the tricks he has been using to rob people’s money from their bank accounts.
The suspect said that the moment you allow him to help you, he memorises your pincode and later he exchanges your ATM card with his.
He added that after noticing the pincode, he goes to the next ATM machine and withdraws your money.
Atukwasa admits that he has been doing this in Sheema but he ran away when police began trailing him.
Police has cautioned the public to be vigilant and to avoid receiving help from strangers while transacting at ATM machines.
