LIRA – Police in Lira’s Central Police Station are holding four suspects who have been arrested with counterfeit notes of US Dollars and replica South Sudanese Pounds.

The Police Spokesman for Kyoga North, ASP David Ongom Mudong confirmed the incident on July 22. The identified suspects include; Ambrose Okot, Sam Odongo, Martin Otia and Andrew Aleny all Lango by tribe.

He estimated the counterfeits to be worth over fifty (50) million in Ugandan currency.

He says that upon receiving intelligence reports, police conducted a covert operation on the suspects on July 19, 2019, that first led to the arrest of Ambrose Okot and Sam Odong along Lira Town’s main street.

He noted that upon interrogating the duo, their accomplices Martin Otia and Andrew Aleny were as well pursued and apprehended at Ambalal Primary School in Adyel Division, Lira Municipality.

The suspects were found in possession of counterfeit notes of US dollars and South Sudanese pounds.

According to Police, intelligence revealed that the suspects are a racket of gangs who have organized themselves with intention to defraud their unsuspecting soft targets within the public.

Mr Ongom commended the residents of Lira for their vigilance.

“As the police, through community policing we do appreciate the members of the public for the vigilance exhibited against the vice that has always helped us to succeed during this kind of operation.”

Police say upon conclusion of enquiry, the suspects shall be paraded in courts of law.
