Two arrested over illegal possession of wildlife products

Police in Mbale have two men arrested over illegal possession of wildlife products. (FILE PHOTO)

MBALE – Mbale police has in custody two men who were found in possession of wildlife products.

Mariko Lowoco and Peter Locap, both residents of Namatala ward in Mbale Municipality have been arrested and are locked up at Male Central Police.

The suspects were allegedly found in possession of an Ostrich egg, six ostrich eggshells and three pieces of camel skin.

The acting Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. John Robert Tukei, says both suspects were picked up from Mbale Central Market on a tip-off.

“Some concerned traders informed us that they were keeping wildlife products without authorisation,” he said.

Mr. Tukei says Locap claims to have bought the products from Jie warriors in Moroto during the last festive season.

Mr.  Fredrick Kizza the Chief Warden Mt. Elgon Conservation Area said the duo must be brought arraigned before court and be charged because they are part of click that kills protected species for their products.

“killing wildlife affects tourism,” he said.
