KAMPALA – Happy Mwesigye, 39, has been charged and remanded to Luzira prison over alleged murder of Kyebando police post OC Francis Kato.
Mwesigye a driver appeared before grade one magistrate Ms Beatrice Kainza who read the charge to him, however she did not allow to say anything since it is a capital offence that can only be heard in the High Court.
Prosecution led by Ms Lydia Batiibwe states that on May 17, 2018 at Kyenando along Northern by-pass road, in Kampala district , Mwesigye and others still at large with malice aforethought murdered ASP Kato.
“You shall not take plea because this is a capital offence that can only be heard in the High Court. However you have a right to bail in the High Court,” The trial Magistrate Ms Kainza said before remanding the accused to July 3.
Ms Batiibwe also informed court that investigation in the case where still ongoing and thus seeking for an adjournment.
According to the court documents, the officer was knocked dead by an unidentified car while he was returning from duty at Kira Road where he worked as duty officer. He was returning to his duty beat at Kyebando and he met his death.
In November last year Mukono Division Commander of the defunct Flying Squad Unit, Rwego Muhoozi died in an accident on Ntenjeru-Katosi Road while running after suspected robbers.
