KAMPALA, Uganda —The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) will conduct a nationwide Aquaculture Census starting in May, according to the agency’s executive director, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza. The census, a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, aims to gather crucial structural data on Uganda’s aquaculture sector.
Mukiza said the exercise will provide benchmark information on the number, size, and distribution of aquaculture holdings, the characteristics of aquaculture households, land use, and other relevant inputs.
The census will collect comprehensive and accurate data on the aquaculture sector nationwide, generating information on the number of aquaculture farms and facilities, production levels and aquaculture systems in use, socio-economic data on operators, and the environmental impact of activities.
All aquaculture farms, in both household and non-household sectors, will be visited by enumerators.
Mukiza assured stakeholders that all collected data would be treated with the utmost confidentiality. He appealed to government ministries, local authorities, the private sector, and the public to support the enumerators by providing accurate information.
