KAMPALA – In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA) launched its 11th annual caravan, aiming to bring hope and empowerment to the less privileged communities in Mbarara City.
Since inception in 2013, AMDA caravan has been a beacon of hope for those in need, providing a multifaceted approach to development, including education, medical camps, and economic empowerment. This year’s caravan, scheduled to take place in August 2025, promises to be the most impactful yet, with a budget of over shs500 million and an expected turnout of over 10,000 people.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Chris Gumisiriza, Association Chairman, emphasized the importance of AMDA’s holistic approach to development. “Today, we proudly launch the AMDA Caravan 2025, our eleventh annual event. This year, we’re headed to Nyamitanga Cathedral, where we’ll provide a helping hand to those in need,” he said.

“Our multifaceted approach includes a medical camp, where experts from Kampala will offer free treatment to our parishioners. In partnership with the government, we’re working tirelessly to combat poverty. We’re providing coffee plants and other essential resources to support economic growth. Additionally, we’re offering scholarships to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, empowering them to build a brighter future.”
This year’s camp will offer specialized services like cleft lip and fistula repairs, eye care, and cataract surgeries, dental services, and more. Considering that Mbarara is a city, the caravan expects over 10,000 people to attend. The AMDA Caravan 2025 will move to Mbarara City, specifically to Nyamitanga Cathedral Parish, and St. John Baptist Kibona Parish, in August 2025.
The organization has set an ambitious budget of over shs500 million and has already collected over shs140 million. Mr. Gumisiriza extended his heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated members and friends who have stood by AMDA throughout its journey. “Together, let’s make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve,” he said.
Mbarara City Woman MP, Rita Atukwasa, praised AMDA for their exemplary activities, which align seamlessly with government objectives. “Their commitment to providing services without discrimination, based on religious affiliation, sets a remarkable precedent,” she said.
“Their dedication to upholding biblical values in their endeavors is truly admirable. It’s a shining example that other religious groups and organizations would do well to emulate. By doing so, we can foster greater unity, inclusivity, and social cohesion.”

The Chief Guest, Hon. General Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Internal Affairs, also commended AMDA’s efforts, urging the organization to continue its good work.
“I must say, I’m impressed by your caravan’s holistic approach to development,” he said. “Your motto, ‘pray and work,’ resonates deeply with me. It’s clear that you’re not just focused on spiritual growth, but also on economic empowerment. As I always say, poverty and discontent often go hand-in-hand. But I believe that God has blessed us with abundant resources and opportunities. Let’s harness these blessings to improve our livelihoods.”
Minister Otafiire was particularly pleased to see that AMDA prioritizes education, demonstrating a commitment to empowering individuals and communities. “Many of you here are accomplished individuals, and I urge you to use your skills and expertise to uplift the less fortunate,” he said.
“As leaders, we often fall into the trap of self-interest, neglecting the very people who entrusted us with power. I encourage you to hold us accountable and to participate actively in the democratic process. Remember, this country belongs to all of us, and we must work together to build a brighter future.”
In support of AMDA’s endeavors, Minister Otafiire contributed shs10 million to the caravan. The organization’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, and their commitment to empowering communities has earned them recognition and praise from leaders and community members alike. As AMDA embarks on its 11th annual caravan, the organization remains committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve. With the support of its members, partners, and the community, AMDA is poised to bring hope and empowerment to the less privileged communities in Mbarara City.
The 2024 AMDA Caravan in Bwizibwera and Rushooka parishes in Ntungamo district made a great impact.
The Caravan’s medical team offered free services, including specialized care and surgeries, to over 5,000 patients. This was made possible through the collaboration of 600 health workers who volunteered their expertise. Additionally, the team conducted health education and awareness programs to empower the community with knowledge about maintaining good health.
Infrastructure development was another key focus area. AMDA contributed 3 million UGX towards paving the church compound, constructed two shallow wells valued at 20 million UGX, and completed renovations totaling 60 million UGX. These improvements will have a lasting impact on the community’s quality of life.
Economic empowerment initiatives were also integral to the Caravan’s mission. Financial literacy and mindset change talks were conducted to equip individuals with the skills necessary to improve their economic well-being. Furthermore, the team distributed 10,000 coffee seedlings, 6,000 fruit seedlings, 19,000 Eucalyptus seedlings, and 11,520 indigenous fruit seedlings to promote environmental sustainability.
Education was another critical aspect of the Caravan’s outreach. 100 textbooks, pens, and success cards were provided to candidates, and 100 secondary school teachers were trained on the new curriculum. This investment in education will have a ripple effect, benefiting future generations.
The AMDA Caravan also addressed legal challenges faced by the community. In collaboration with the Uganda Law Society, legal clinics were held, providing support for individuals seeking justice.
