KAMPALA – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) of Uganda and Kenya’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster political cooperation between the two nations.
This historic agreement was reached after days of dialogue between the two parties, led by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and UDA’s Senator Hassan Omar.
“We are delighted to sign this MOU, which marks a significant milestone in our bilateral relations,” said Todwong during the signing ceremony at the NRM headquarters.
“Guided by this memorandum of understanding, our party-to-party relations will have a more in-depth development.”
Todwong emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating that it will enable the two parties to consolidate their relations and explore new ways to enhance their partnership.
“We very much cherish the friendship with our Kenyan neighbors. We view Kenya as a reliable friend and good partner,” he added.
Omar expressed his party’s interest in learning from NRM’s strategies, which have enabled them to maintain leadership for nearly four decades.
“We came here on a mission to search for knowledge, ideas, and share experiences on how we can move forward as brothers in Uganda and Kenya and progressively towards the realization of the East African Federation,” he said.
Omar highlighted the similarities between the two countries and emphasized their commitment to progressing toward the realization of the East African Federation.
“These two sister countries can never be separated no matter the problems they have between them because we share many similarities,” he noted.
Maj. Pollar Awich, the NRM’s Director for External Affairs, said the ruling party was happy to host and share experiences with their neighbors.
“We have learnt a lot from the discussions we had and hope to integrate them into our operations,” Awich said.
The meeting was attended by prominent members of the NRM, including Hon. Lydia Wanyoto, the Party Women’s League Chairperson, and Hon. James Tweheyo, Chairperson Workers League. The UDA delegation also met with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe, as part of their six-day tour.
The MOU is expected to strengthen ties between the two countries by increasing high-level exchange visits and sharing experiences. The agreement is also seen as a significant step towards promoting regional integration and cooperation.
As the two parties look to implement the terms of the MOU, they are optimistic about the future of their bilateral relations. “We are committed to working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in our region,” said Todwong.
The signing of the MOU marks a new chapter in the relations between the NRM and UDA, and is expected to have a positive impact on the people of both countries.
