KAMPALA – Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has issued a passionate plea to Ugandans to unite against the oppressive regime of President Yoweri Museveni, citing the deteriorating health and illegal detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Besigye, a renowned opposition leader, has been imprisoned since November 2024, facing multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms and threatening national security.
Bobi Wine emphasized that Besigye’s trials are not an isolated attack, but rather a symptom of a broader assault on democracy and human rights in Uganda. He urged citizens to recognize the gravity of the situation, stressing that the persecution of Besigye and other political prisoners can happen to anyone who opposes the regime.
“The present trials and tribulations of Dr. Kizza Besigye must not be seen as an attack on him alone but an attack on all of us,” Bobi Wine stated. “He is being detained illegally. He is being persecuted. He is sick. He needs urgent medical attention.”
The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has also demanded Besigye’s immediate release, citing his deteriorating health condition and the need for specialized medical intervention. The UMA emphasized that healthcare is a fundamental human right, as declared by the Uganda Constitution, and that Besigye is entitled to the highest standard of medical care available.
Bobi Wine warned that the regime’s actions are not empty threats, drawing parallels with the Holocaust and genocides throughout history.
He saluted those protesting and calling for Besigye’s release, urging everyone to do everything within their power to demand the immediate release of Besigye and other prisoners of conscience.
Dr. Besigye has on Sunday been rushed to a private clinic in Bugolobi as his health condition deteriorated.
