WAKISO – Police in Kajjansi have cracked down on a string of motor vehicle number plate thefts with the arrest of Mumbere Brian, alias Natamba, the primary suspect behind the thefts. Natamba’s arrest led to an intelligence-led operation on January 1, 2025, which uncovered 16 hidden number plates in areas such as Zana, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe. These plates were likely stashed away to extort money from the victims.
“We are pleased to have recovered these stolen number plates, which will help to prevent further crimes and bring relief to the affected vehicle owners,” said the police spokesperson. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent such crimes.”
Further interrogation revealed that Natamba had more number plates hidden in various areas within and outside Kajjansi Division. This led to a joint operation on January 4, 2025, by officers from Kajjansi and Nateete Division, resulting in the recovery of an additional 15 number plates hidden in areas such as Kisigula, Katale, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.
In total, Natamba is believed to have stolen over 30 number plates within a single month. The recovery of these plates is a significant step in addressing the issue of number plate theft, which can have serious consequences, including identity theft and misuse.
