Karamoja Rights Advocates Network has issued a strong advocacy statement condemning the unjust arrest and alleged brutalization of Counsel Eron Kizza, a renowned human rights lawyer. The incident occurred while Kizza was executing his professional duties at the General Court Martial during the hearing of Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Mr. Habed Lutale’s case.
“The reported physical assault on him while performing his professional responsibilities is not only unlawful but also a chilling message to the legal fraternity and all who champion human rights in Uganda,” the statement read.
The network reminded the Government of Uganda and its security apparatus that lawyers play a pivotal role in the administration of justice, as guaranteed under Article 28 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and various international instruments.
