The Uganda Law Society (ULS) and its election committee chair, Moses Mwase, have been taken to court over allegations of unfairly excluding a candidate from the upcoming elections.
Ms. Pheona Nabasa Wall, a former ULS president, claims that her name was omitted from the final nomination list for the position of ULS representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) without valid reason.
According to court documents, Ms. Nabasa had submitted her nomination papers on December 3, 2024, and was verified by the Elections Committee. However, later that evening, the ULS president, Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde, circulated a list of nominated candidates without Ms. Nabasa’s name.
The list was signed by Mr. Mwase and posted on his personal social media platform.
Ms. Nabasa is seeking a court order to quash the decision to exclude her from the nomination list and to reinstate her name.
She also wants the court to direct the ULS to hold elections in compliance with the principles of equity, neutrality, and the ULS Act and its rules.
The case has sparked controversy, with Ms. Nabasa alleging that the ULS president launched a social media attack on her, publicly rejecting her candidacy.
She is seeking general damages for inconvenience, reputational damage, and mental anguish suffered as a result.
