KAMPALA, Uganda — The Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan has donated a vital oxygen cylinder and mama kits to Butoro Health Centre III in Kamengo County, Mpigi District, in a bid to improve maternal healthcare services.
The donation, made during a Family Health Day event held at the health center on November 30, is expected to benefit newborns experiencing respiratory distress or cyanotic episodes greatly.
According to Marion Nakato Eduruma, president of the Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan, the oxygen cylinder is a temporary measure to support the health center’s maternity department while efforts continue to secure funding for a neonatal resuscitation unit.
“The oxygen cylinder will serve as a critical lifeline for newborns in distress, and we are committed to supporting the health center’s efforts to provide quality maternal healthcare services,” Eduruma said.
The health center has also seen an improvement in its services since the Rotary Club donated an ultrasound scanner last year. As a result, the facility has reduced its referrals to larger hospitals, providing more comprehensive care to its patients.
Fred Bakidde, the in-charge of Butoro Health Centre III, praised the Rotary Club’s support, saying it has greatly improved the facility’s services.
“The Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan has provided us with significant support, including the renovation of our antenatal block and the construction of a shelter,” Bakidde said. “Today, they have further supported our maternity department by delivering an oxygen supply system, which will greatly benefit our patients.”
Bakidde also cautioned communities against relying on herbal remedies, citing concerns over their safety and effectiveness.
“The government should take stringent measures against freelance herbalists who keep patients from receiving proper treatment,” he said.
A beneficiary of the free medical services also expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club.
“I am grateful for the free medical services provided by the Rotarians,” the beneficiary said. “This event has been a godsend for our community, addressing the healthcare needs of many who lack access to medical care. We appreciate the Rotarians’ kindness and generosity.”
The donation is part of the Rotary Club’s broader efforts to support communities in need, particularly in the areas of healthcare and environmental sustainability. The club has also embarked on a tree-planting project, dubbed “Plant Your Balance,” an initiative launched by District Governor Anne Nkutu. As part of this initiative, the Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan aims to plant 9,000 trees over the next three years, with 700 trees already planted.
“We have set a target of planting 9,000 trees over the next three years,” Eduruma said. “While we have made a good start, with 700 trees planted so far, we are committed to achieving our goal and making a lasting impact on the environment.”
