In a press release statement issued on December 12, 2024, the Uganda Police Force strongly condemned the unprofessional conduct of its officers during an arrest in Mbarara City. A video circulating on social media platforms showed police officers, one in uniform and others in civilian attire, dragging a female through mud to a car during the arrest.
“The mode of arrest contradicts our professional standards,” said the police in a statement. “We take these allegations seriously and have taken swift action to address the situation.”
The officers involved in the incident have been identified as ASP Andrew Betunga, Detective Constable Darious Aharizira, Detective Constable Hope Nsasirwe, and Detective Constable Loyce Kiboneka.
All four officers have been arrested and are currently detained in Mbarara. The police force has assured the public that further updates regarding the progress of their disciplinary action will be provided later.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about police brutality and corruption in Uganda. According to a recent survey, only about one in five Ugandans think the police usually operate in a professional manner and respect citizens’ rights. The Uganda Police Force has been working to address these concerns and restore public trust.
