KAMPALA – Four-time presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye, and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, have been further remanded until January 7, 2025. This decision was made to allow the defense lawyers adequate time to fully constitute themselves and properly represent their clients.
The Army Court, however, expressed frustration with the continuous delays and excuses presented by the defense during previous court sessions. The court’s patience is wearing thin, and it’s clear that they want to move forward with the trial.
Besigye and Lutale are facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The prosecution alleges that the two committed these offenses in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as in Athens, Greece, and Geneva, Switzerland.
The defense team, led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, has been working to process the practicing certificate of Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, who was appointed to lead the defense team. However, Karua’s accreditation has been delayed, causing further delays in the trial.
As the trial continues, Besigye’s supporters remain steadfast in their support for the opposition leader. Despite the challenges and delays, Besigye remains committed to his cause, and his legal team is working tirelessly to ensure that he receives a fair trial.
