KAMPALA – A dramatic turn of events has unfolded within the Uganda Law Society (ULS) as Secretary Phillip Munaabi and Council Member Geofrey Turyamusiima have been suspended from the ULS Council, effective immediately. This decision was made by the majority of the Council, comprising of President Isaac Ssemakadde, Vice President Asiimwe Anthony, Treasurer Isiko Aurthur, and Council Members Eddie Nangulu, Muhumuza Samuel, and Egaru Emmanuel.
The suspension stems from the unauthorized actions of Munaabi and Turyamusiima, who allegedly created and disseminated false documents, including a 2-page document titled “Council Order No. 1 of 2024 Expulsion of the President and Vice President from the Uganda Law Society Council” and a 4-page document titled “STATE OF AFFAIRS IN UGANDA LAW SOCIETY (ULS)” ¹.
The Council has denounced these documents, stating that they are not official records of the ULS Council and that the Council has neither considered nor passed any of the resolutions contained therein.
Furthermore, the Council has expressed grave concern over the pattern of subversive conduct exhibited by Munaabi and Turyamusiima, including persistent violations of Council trust, intimidation of ULS staff, and undermining of institutional integrity.
As a result of the suspension, Eddie Nangulu has been appointed as interim Secretary pending the decision of the general meeting scheduled for December 17, 2024. The general meeting will address the removal from office of the suspended members of Council, election of ULS nominees to the Judicial Service Commission, and review of previously deferred books of accounts.
The Uganda Law Society, established under the Uganda Law Society Act, is the Bar Association for lawyers in Uganda, aiming to promote and protect the interests of lawyers across the country.
