Nebbi, Uganda – The Catholic community in Nebbi is mourning the loss of its oldest priest, Fr Emilio Onegwa, who passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 99.
Fr Onegwa was just a few weeks shy of celebrating his 100th birthday on December 8. His demise has sent shockwaves throughout the diocese, with devotees remembering him for his tireless efforts in championing the construction of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral in Nebbi.
According to church authorities, Fr Onegwa’s dream of expanding the Lord’s house came true during his tenure as parish priest. The cathedral’s foundation was laid in the late 1980s, and it was eventually completed with the declaration of Nebbi Diocese in 1996.
Fr Onegwa’s legacy extends far beyond the cathedral’s walls. He dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his community, inspiring countless individuals with his wisdom, compassion, and devotion.
