ENTEBBE – The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and Rural Initiatives for Poverty Alleviation (RIPA) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to empower rural communities in Rubirizi district. This partnership aims to help farmers escape poverty by leveraging NARO’s expertise in agricultural research and technology development, and RIPA’s grassroots network.
Signed by NARO Director General, Dr. Yona Baguma, and RIPA Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tumusiime Vincent Bamugaya, at the NARO headquarters in Entebbe, the MoU focuses on addressing unique challenges in Rubirizi, where average landholdings are just 0.8 acres.
Dr. Baguma emphasized the need for tailored agricultural models, stating, “NARO will provide cutting-edge technologies, including proven crop varieties, improved livestock breeding techniques, and digital farmer solutions to support RIPA’s ongoing projects.” He commended RIPA’s Animal Bank Program, which has uplifted rural livelihoods through zero-grazing dairy cattle and goat-rearing schemes.
RIPA operates a 12-acre model farm in Rubirizi, offering hands-on training in smart agriculture, value addition, and business development. The organization plans to expand into poultry farming, aquaculture, and various crops, establishing a research and education center for modern agribusiness.
“This partnership strengthens our efforts to create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers,” noted Mr. Bamugaya, highlighting alignment with Uganda’s National Development Plan and Vision 2040.
As a leading agricultural research organization, NARO operates through 16 institutes across Uganda, driving sustainable agricultural transformation nationwide and beyond.
