KAMPALA, Uganda — Kyambogo University was abuzz with activity on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, as teachers of French from across Uganda converged to celebrate the International Day of Teachers of French.
The event, themed “The Role of Teachers of French in the 21st Century in the Digital Era of New Technologies,” underscored the vital role of French teachers in advancing language education and strengthening Uganda’s ties with the Francophone world.
The celebration commenced with a community engagement activity, where teachers, officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and local leaders joined forces to clean Banda Market and its surroundings. This act of community service demonstrated the holistic values of French educators, extending their commitment beyond the classroom to foster community hygiene and well-being.
Janya Obrecht, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy, graced the occasion, representing the Ambassador. In her address, she lauded the teachers for their dedication to promoting the French language, emphasizing its importance as a vital link between Uganda and France. Obrecht reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting French education in Uganda, pledging resources to elevate French language teaching.
Prof. Elizabeth Kyazike, Dean of Students at Kyambogo University, highlighted the university’s achievements in promoting French, including the establishment of a French Corner in the library and a thriving French Club, thanks to the support of the French Embassy.
Agatha Tumwine, President of the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO), emphasized the need for innovation in teaching methods, particularly in light of rapid technological advancements. Tumwine cited ongoing master’s programs at Makerere University and distance learning opportunities in France, supported by the French Embassy, as reasons for optimism.
Phiona Kabahuma, a French teacher at Seeta High School, Mukono, applauded Kyambogo University for its role in training French educators. She stressed the importance of French teachers embracing technology to stay relevant in the digital era.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing French education in Uganda, bridging cultures, nurturing young minds, and preparing for a future driven by innovation.
