MBALE – A shocking incident unfolded in Mbale City on November 16, 2024, when a group of Imbalu boys, armed with pangas, sticks, and stones, launched a violent attack on several individuals in Katwaka Cell, Bumagenyi Ward.
According to police, the assault left one man, Wesonga Swaib, critically injured after being struck on the head with a panga. Other victims were robbed of their belongings, including mobile phones and various unidentified items.
“Three suspects, Wamimbi Bosco, Watuwa Bernard, and Wabulo Moses, have been arrested in connection with the violent attack that injured Wesonga Swaib and robbed several victims of their belongings in Katwaka Cell, Bumagenyi Ward, Industrial Division of Mbale City on November 16, 2024,” said Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesperson.
He notes that the attackers’ motives are unclear, but their actions have raised concerns about the peaceful observation of the Imbalu cultural practice.
Umukhukha III, the cultural leader of the Bamasaaba, has previously condemned the practice of Imbalu circumcision rituals before the official launch scheduled for August.
“This incident may be linked to the tensions surrounding these early festivities,” said Kituuma
Fortunately, Wesonga Swaib received prompt medical attention at Bunampongo Health Centre III, courtesy of his relatives.
The authorities have emphasized that this violence undermines the cultural practice of Imbalu, which has been peacefully observed for years. Security agencies are taking the situation seriously to prevent further disruptions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and respect during cultural events.
In related news, Mbale City has faced threats from armed Kadodi groups launching invasions, committing crimes such as robbery, defilement, and rape. The community remains vigilant, seeking to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
